Hey friend! This week on the coast feels like that sweet spot between spring and summer — warm days, cool nights, and just enough breeze to make a beach walk perfect. In this issue of Hey Coastal Weekly, we’re talking weekend beach vibes, a wild ghost-and-shipwreck story from Bald Head Island, a can’t-miss local spot, and events from all across the coast.

🌊 BEACH CONDITIONS THIS WEEK

Water temps are easing into the low to mid 60s along most of the NC coast, which means you can finally ditch the full-on polar plunge vibes and actually enjoy a dip. Surf is running on the mellow side — think 1–3 ft most days — so it’s great for beginners, longboarders, and just bobbing around between sandbar chats. Friday looks like the calmest overall, with Saturday and Sunday bringing a little more breeze and chop, but still totally beach‑day friendly. Pack a light layer for those evening pier walks — sunset is where the magic’s at.

THIS WEEK’S STORY

The Ghosts, Shoals, and Secrets of Bald Head Island

If you’ve ever looked at a map and wondered about that little triangle of land at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, that’s Bald Head Island — quiet, golf carts only, and low-key one of the most dramatic places on the entire NC coast if you know the backstory. On a sunny afternoon it’s all dunes, bikes, and boardwalks, but after dark, the island feels like it’s still listening to 300 years of shipwrecks and storms.

Just off the coast sits Frying Pan Shoals, a long, shifting sandbar that has been chewing up ships since the age of sail. Captains would sail toward the Cape Fear River thinking they were almost home, only to find themselves in shallow water with waves breaking where the chart said “safe.” Before GPS and modern lights, this area was called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for a reason — hundreds of wrecks, lost cargo, and stories that never quite made it back to shore.

To try and keep people alive, they built lighthouses — a whole series of them — but the one everyone knows today is Old Baldy, the weathered brick lighthouse that still watches over the island. It’s the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina, and climbing it on a clear day gives you this panoramic view of marshes, ocean, and the river all colliding. It’s beautiful now, but you can almost imagine what it felt like to be a sailor, scanning that light and hoping this time you’d make it past the shoals.

Of course, a place with this much history was never going to stay ghost‑free. One of the island’s most enduring legends is tied to Theodosia Burr Alston — the daughter of Aaron Burr — whose ship disappeared off the Carolina coast in 1813 and was never officially found. Over the years, stories started popping up on Bald Head of a well‑dressed woman wandering the dunes or the shoreline after storms, looking out to sea like she’s still searching for something. Some say she’s guarding what’s left of her ship; others think she’s just trying to get home and never quite makes it.

Today, Bald Head feels like the chill opposite of all that drama — no cars, quiet streets, turtles nesting in the summer, families biking to the beach access with chairs balanced on handlebars. But that’s what makes it so fun to explore: under that peaceful vacation vibe, you’re walking the same sand that sailors, pilots, and ship captains once watched with a lot less certainty. If you’re looking for a day trip with a little mystery baked in, hop the ferry from Southport, climb Old Baldy, and take an evening walk along the water. Just don’t be surprised if the wind sounds a little like whispers when the sun goes down.

COASTAL SPOTLIGHT

This week’s spotlight is Fishy Fishy Cafe in Southport. This place sits right on the water with big sunset views over the Cape Fear River, colorful drinks, and a menu that leans hard into coastal comfort — think shrimp tacos, fresh fish, and hushpuppies that should honestly have their own fan club. Grab a table on the deck, watch the boats slide by, and you’ll understand why both locals and visitors keep this spot in their regular rotation.
